What does the markings on the sidewall of tyres denote

The sidewall of the tyre contains many secrets about the tyre, and when one learns to read the markings, he/she becomes capable of knowing everything that a manufacturer wants us to know. The most important among all the readings is the size of the tyre, as it helps us identify whether the tyre can be mounted on the rim. The statement is true, but can you fit any tyre to your car if it has the diameter as the rims? The answer is no. Not unless it is authorized to use with the car.

There is a process of getting a clearance certificate or tyre approval for knowing if the tyre is good enough for the vehicle. It is a document that states if the new tyres should be fitted into the vehicle. This is important as some modern Yokohoma Banden Utrecht have special features, and they are not meant for every vehicle type despite their size.

How to Get It

The tyre approval or the clearance certificate is issued by the tyre manufacturer, vehicle company or a test centre. Without it, one cannot fit the new tyre unless information regarding the wheel and rim is provided in the vehicle’s documents. To get the approval, one can contact a local retailer and provide him information about vehicle model, class, speed etc., to claim your certificate. Any approved automobile centre or vehicle manufacturer will not give you the certificate directly without the necessary test. The process of acquiring the certificate is simple, and it is recommended to keep the following information handy –

· Vehicle manufacturer

· Model

You can find both the information in the vehicle’s registration document.

· Power in kW

· Top Speed

· Initial Registration

· Front and rear axle loads

The Confusion

Their diameter generally measures tyres, which is why they are marked as 26 inches or 28 inches, but these markings are not as simple to understand as they look. For example, a tyre with marking 28 inches is smaller than a tyre marked 27 inches, whereas 1.5 and 1 ½ could mean two different things. To resolve this problem, companies have started to mark the tyres according to International Standards Organisation (ISO).

The ISO marked numbers are separated by a dash, where the first two numbers indicate the width of the tyre and numbers after the dash determines the bead diameter. Bead diameter is the size at which an Autobanden Utrecht can be mounted on the rim. Before ISO, different countries used different standards, which created a lot of confusion. For instance, a 26 inches tyre was denoted differently in countries. ISO then came into existence by ETRTO (European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation). If two tyres have the same ISO markings, they are exchangeable and can be used in each other’s place even if they are marked differently. It is important to know the bead diameter because it’s become easier to find the right size if it is known.

When You Are Using Two Different Tyres

There are times when one has to use different tyres due to reasons like unavailability or economic constraints. In such a situation, it is recommended that both tyres should be approved, and they both (same brand and same tread patterns) should be fitted across the same axle, that is, installing two identical tiers on the front axle and two identical tyres on the rear. This minimizes the damage to an extent. If someone wishes to mix tyres, it’s best to do it all at once or in pairs. If only one tyre is replaced, it adversely affects the suspension system, gear ratios, transmissions, and tyre wear. If single tyre replacement is not possible, the new tyre should be fitted with the deepest tread tyre from the vehicle (including the full-size spare) and both be placed as a pair accordingly. Once again, it is important to have tyre approval before thinking of changing the tyres.
