Get Essential Knowledge about the MOT Test?

The MOT test is conducted for car drivers. The main aim of MOT is testing the cars for roadworthiness. Faulty cars are not safe for roads. Therefore, every driver is legally obliged to submit his vehicle to the test centre of his choice.

How do car drivers get the certificate?

If you are looking for the MOT certificate, you can visit any nearby MOT centre. There are thousands of centres across the country. Therefore, it is not tough for a driver to find a tent centre.

When you register for an MOT centre, they will provide a date to you, and you have to arrive at the centre on the same day.

After the test is started, the tester can check different parts of your vehicle to check the present condition.

If he is satisfied that the vehicle has no serious mechanical faults, the centre will provide the MOT certificate to you.

This certificate is not valid forever, and you have to renew it next year by registering to the centre again.

How long does the test take?

A normal MOT test should take 45 minutes to 1 hour.

An average MOT test takes between 45 and 60 minutes, but there are a couple of other things to consider.

If your vehicle fails its test, you have to repair the faults to have a retest or a full test again.

Your centre will not allow you to take your car away if it has failed its test.

The centre will expect you to drip your vehicle in the morning, and you can take it back after the test.

Checklist to avoid failure in the MOT test

Read the following items of checklists to pass the MOT test:

Tyres: Tyres are important to consider. You have to make sure your tyres have at least the minimum allowed tread depth. Moreover, check the air pressure in your tyres as well. The physical condition of your tyres should also be a concern for you.

Headlight and indicators:

Check the front, rear, headlights, indicators, hazard lights, braking lights etc.

Seats and seatbelts:

You have to check the seats and seatbelts for proper adjustment and damage.

Windscreen:

Damage that is wider than 10mm in the driver’s view is enough to catch the attention of the MOT tester. He will certainly fail the vehicle because of this fault. Damage larger than 40mm in the swept area is also not a positive sign.

Windscreen wipers:

Windscreen washers should function properly, and you should clean the windscreen along with wipers as well.

Suspension:

You should check the shock absorbers. Apply your weight to each corner and release it quickly to check the shock observers.

Horn: Horn should work properly without making too much loud noise.

Exhaust system:

Start your engine in a ventilated area and try to listen from the rear. Check if you hear any abnormal sounds or not.

Fuel and engine oil:

You have to ensure that your car has enough fuel and engine oil.

What if your car fails its test?

If your vehicle fails its test, the centre will provide a VY30 certificate. This certificate is supposed to show the reason for the failure.

Faults are categorized into three main categories called minor, major, and dangerous.

Your car usually fails the test due to dangerous or major faults.

What if your MOT certificate is expired?

If your certificate has expired, you have to register on the website of the Government to arrange the test for your vehicle.

It is illegal to drive a vehicle without a legal MOT certificate.

There is an exception, and you have booked the test and driving the car to the centre.

If your car has failed its MOT Boston test, you must repair the faults to arrange a retest or a test again. After your car fails in the test, if your certificate is not expired, you should not drive the car with even your valid certificate since it is not morally and ethically a good job.
